PESONAL: THE NET FOR TEACHERZ LIKE ME^^

With the advent of internet... who am I kidding here, this is certainly not my style... now, let's start again...

The net, what does it mean to me as a confirmed addict...

First, I love it because I can get all stuff just by googling and yahooing. I used to altavistaing, but found Yahoo, and later Google, much better. Now I must admit that I am the King...no must be gender correct, Queen of Googling. Give me anything, and I will google. If any of my students said they cannot find stuff on the net, that's it... Drop my course, you don't deserve to be in this class then. Because in this class, nothing can't be found on the net. Do you get that!!! Ya, Puan, nanti saya cari lagi.

Well, Odi did not really say it that way. She's too nice to threaten her students... She usually says directly in a very 'lemah lembut, gemalai', gentle way: Itu pun kamu tak tahu, cari benda lain kamu tahu, dah...pegi cari lagi.

I think I should offer a course on how to search on the net, given the number of students who cannot find academic materials on the net. However, I believe that they are definitely the princes and princesses of searching for non-academic stuff, or they would not have gone to mysoju, youtube, test tube, and TI-UP^^.

You can confirm with my students on the materials they used from the net: TextStar, Ironcreek, dictionaries, papers from ISI and SCOPUS-recognized journals, youtube on Randy Pausch, Chomsky and a number of other academicians... and not to mention

Youtube of Faizal Tahir, Aizat, Sudirman, Siti Nurhaliza... What have all this people got to do with linguistics? A lot actually. And that was also one of the favorite questions by my students: Dr, apa kene mengena ___(fill in the blanks)___ dengan linguistik? Itupun kamu tak tahu. Kamu ni tahun 1/2/3 USM ke atau Tahun 1/2/3 Sekolah Rendah USM. Tak tau sekarang tak pe. Yang penting, exam nanti kamu tahu. Pi cari sendiri^^.

Second, the net allows me to interact with my students miles and miles, and hours and hours away. For instance, Alin and I discussed about materials that should be given to class using Yahoo! Messenger.

Knock, knock. Dr ada?
Ada.
Kawan tanya kelas cancel ke, Dr.
Ada tak saya sebut cancel?
Tak ada.
Kena pegila, Dr.
Kenala.
Knape...saya tak da kat USM. Keje jalan. Kamu beri bahan ni (send the file). Macam biasa ambil kedatangan.

See nothing is impossible on the net. FYI, I was in Brunei, chasing Yabit out of the way.

My Yahoo! Messenger is on 24/7 and students can contact me any time, provided I reply back laaa.... Usually, they would always give me a knock first, followed by Dr ada. Why, because I am usually invisible, and do not want to be disturbed when I am preparing my notes. Peak season for the students to contact me is assignment and exam time.

There's this habit among my students that I discovered. Quite a number of them would not dare ask me personally. So they would as other students to yahoo mess me or chat with me. Because of that I had a few middleman, or should I say, middle student, who acted as liason officers, such as Alin, Sharifah, and Jidah. Effe and a few others would contact me directly.

And the net too helped me locate students who went missing in action. I am not sure if any of you remember me searching for Erhan. Thank God for the email and FB. He responded to my CALL, more like a written SHOUT, and managed to graduate from my class, and is pursuing his dream of becoming a photographer. I can tel you, he's good. Cek diz ...http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=27118&id=100000162916662&ref=mf

But most of all the net has allowed me "To boldly go where no man and woman has gone before"

INTERNET: The final frontier
These are the voyages of the Odi's Internet Enterprise
Its lifetime mission
To explore strange new worlds
To seek out new life and new civilizations
To boldly go where no man and woman has gone before

Which is the drambeans... and allkpop... and cpopaccess.. and.... youtube...and my soju...and viiki....yiiiiippppeeeeee...

So I don't understand why some individuals want to block certain stuff and not see the advantages of the net to people like me..... hmmmm....
