PERSONAL: snow, snow, snow^__^

Cuaca nampak macam mendung. Ikut ramalan cuaca, dia kata mendung berawan.

lepas pergi muzium ni, baru masuk istana... memang gah , mana tak gah 3000won... tiket masuknye..

dah habis, terus pergi ke stesen tren..aleh2 ada cerita tentang maharaja sejong - the story of king sejong http://english.seoul.go.kr/gtk/news/news_view.php?idx=7221

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sejong_the_Great, http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Dae_Wang_Sejong, http://www.asiasociety.org/countries-history/traditions/king-sejong-great

dah habis, tengok 'jump' - 36000won... bengkok, tapi ndak gak tengok... rasanya nanta lagi sedap...

http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/SI/SI_EN_3_2_3.jsp?cid=292737

habis je tengok, cepat2 jalan balik, takut terlepas bas - su'ad kata bas akhir pukul 12.00 mlm.. sampai gangbyeon, terus lari kejar bas.. bas tak ada lagi, tunggu tak lama - 1117 sampai terus je naik... ketuhar gelombang lagi... bukak je baju selai selai, sampai tinggal dua lapis je... nasib baik le baju yang tinggal tangan panjang... kalau singlet je, alamat kena tahan panas gak le...

alhamdulliilah odi sampai rumah su'ad lagi lima minit pukul 12.00... kesian lak pd su'ad.. kene kejot, sbb pintu tak leh bukak.. odi pun dah takut sebenornya... mula la segala cerita seram korea terbayang.. balik tadi pun dah ikut jalan jauh, tak naik tangga... naik lif pun mencangkung sebab dinding ada cermin, pintu lif bercermin... terbayang macam2... dah le melawat segala tempat lama... lampu depan apt su'ad lak auto...jap2 padam, jap2 padam... ingat kena bawak lampu suluh lain kali...

http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/SI/SI_EN_3_2_3.jsp?cat=2&area&dateStart=12-01-2009&startDate=20091201&dateEnd&endDate&keyword&category&areaCode&gotoPage=2&stype&cid=684044&out_service dan http://www.yegam.com/jump/eng/

Kenapa Odi tulis dalam bahasa Melayu - sebab terkesan dari penggunaaan bahasa ibunda orang Korea, sehinggakan 'orange' disebut sebagai 'orenji'..kalau sebut 'orange', tak ada orang Korea yang faham kecuali mereka yang benar-benar mahir menuturkan bahasa Inggeris.... ini Su'ad punya pasal la ni...nak guna bahasa Melayu..letih otak mikirkan apa sebenarnya perkataan bahasa Melayu, kalau rojak kan senang... kalau sms lagi le senang...

dugaan...

PERSONAL, EVERLAND: white christmas at everland on 25 dec 09

on 25 dec 09, long odi and makcik su'ad took the 1113 bus from daesung apt - pronounced as 'desong eh pa te ('e' as in 'emak'), and not to confuse this with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daesung and http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=daesung&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B3GGGL_enKR357KR358&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi

when we got out from the apt building, it was raining and cold... and we, being the superwomen that we are, walked in the rain minus umbrella, hoping and praying that our tudung will act as the waterproof and cold resistent newly designed, or more appropriated newly planned, tudung... by the time, we got on the bus, my tudung, pon-pon, and head were soaking wet... but in the name of adventure, and a stupid one at that, long odi persisted to stick in the cold rain without the umbrella.... no wonder this morning, while typing this note, on the 26 dec 09 around 8 am, long odi had started batuking...

the bus was full with kidz - of course itu would, this bus will take us to direct to everland... the 1113 bus actually started from gangbyeon - one of the two stations long odi regularly used in seoul.

makcik su'ad managed to find a seat, while long odi had to walk till long odi reached the last seat at the back of the bus, really, really, really back.. that when the bus passed through a bump, long odi's head hit the roof.. no la...just exaggerate here... but it felt like long odi almost hit the the roof, long odi was inches away from the roof..

one thing tak sedap about sitting at the back of the bus was one had to watch stuff that one did not wish to... first, a very drunk young man began to hit on the girls before he got off the bus...

second was the little korean drama scenes among the young couples... all moving here and there... too x-rated to describe for kak long, angah, and uda.... long odi tried to look out of the window... but long odi can't see a thing as the window was heavily tinted with mist....wished long odi had mist buster at the time...
the road to the bus terminal parking lot at everland was really jam packed with cars - double parking... so it took a little longer to reach the lot... when we were going back from everland, there were less cars parked on the side of the roads, so it was a lot easier to get out of the road leading to the parking lot.

we went straight to the ticket counter... makcik su'ad used her crediit cart, so we got discounts... it cost long odi 22000won as opposed to the original 36000won... thank you makcik su'ad's credit card;)

when we entered everland, the first thing makcik su'ad said was to find some kind of brochures or guides to help us with the parade schedule... got one and makcik su'ad started to figure out the time for the parades... the koreans like to use this 24 hour clock, and long odi who was, and still is, hopeless with basic arithmathematics, kept going on mumbling and stumbling with the numbers, when makcik su'ad finished ticking and circling the time on the guide...

anyhow, we then moved to the shops and places that long odi and makcik su'ad will throw up... so no T-expresss, DEFINITELY....

the lines to wait for all entrances were very long... we had to wait one hour to the 'rotating house' which only took us like 5 minutes for the ride... so if any of you decide to come and visit everland, come during weekdays when not festivals whatsoever is on... school and working days are recommended... find an excuse like you had to run for an errand or to do extra library research for your school project..when actually you are in everland... pontenging and cutting classes and work... kidz don't try this without long odi's permission ye.. your parents will definitely ground you for life...

we had a blast at the parade and magic in the sky firework shows... it was just plain awesome to use the 90210 slang... OMG, it was great, fantastico...

not oh my goat ye, buat oh my god.. this is an expression that long odi found that the kidz here like to use... one girl on the bus on the way back from everland keppt using this expression as filler while talking to her friends.. wonder if she knows what the expression really means

back to everland, when we got out of the alpine restaurant ..don't be fool by the name, it served korean food with the helpers dressed like the characters in the von trapp family in teh sound of music...it was snowing..

first, tiny flurries, then it got bigger by the time the magic show finished... long odi finally got her wish... white xmas in seoul or kwangju to be exact

so kak long, kak ngah, uda, haidah, emi, along, angah, and adik can see lots of picts with tiny white dots in long odi's xmas's album...

the snow did not stop till long odi and makcik su'ad reached the house... and long odi dreamed of it the whole nite

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ssssssssssssnnnnnnnnnnnnnooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwiiiiiiiiiiteeeeeeeeee xxxxxxxxxxxxmmmmmmmmmaaaaaaaaassssssssssss

PERSONAL, SEOUL: jumpa sungai, tapi terbabas and terlepas apartment makcik su'ad

dah pusing market ni..patah balik ke sungai...

rupa2nye terus ke dongdaemun...

tengok dah gelap..naik ikut dongdaemun...tertembung Heunginjimun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heunginjimun)

pusing2 cari mana bangunan tinggi2..rupanya kita lalu jalan belakang..

jumpa gak bangunan tinggi tu..( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dongdaemun_Market, http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=dongdaemun&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B3GGGL_enKR357KR358&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi, http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/SH/SH_EN_7_2.jsp?cid=273734, http://www.donami.or.kr/English/)

nak balik guna stesen dongdaemun historical and cultural part...mak datok, banyak exit and track... tengok peta subway, naik.... terbabas entah ke mana2, nasib baik leh turun tren, cari balik tren ke arah yang betol, dan terus gi ke gangbyeon ..

dah lapar, makan odeng and jemput2 ape entah, tak ingat nama dia..

naik bas 117..letih agaknya... terlelap, and terbabas entah kat mana.... tau2 drebar bas kejut..'aqashi aqashi'.. padanlah tinggal long odi sorang-sorang passenger dalam bas tu... rasanya dia tanya gi mana..jawab daesung epate... dia tunjuk turun sini and patah belakang...

jam dah 1030 malam..ni patah kat mana.. baca segala tanda arah jalan..

akhir sekali nampak tanda hankuk university of foreign studies (http://www.hufs.ac.kr/eng/auxiliary/aux01.jsp & http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hankuk_University_of_Foreign_Studies).... ah betul la tu...

dah nak masuk universiti makcik su'ad rupanya...

akhirnya sampai gak umah makcik su'ad... time dah 11.30mlm...

orang pandai inila...

PERSONAL, SEOUL: Seoul Forest, Jungnangcheon(Stream), COEX

http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/SI/SI_EN_3_1_1_1.jsp?cid=789696, http://www.coex.co.kr/eng/, http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/SI/SI_EN_3_1_1_1.jsp?cid=264335

dah pusing satu taman, cari lak eco forest ... bila jumpa, terus jalan atas jejantas.. kat seoul ni bukan kata jambatan banyak, jejantas pun banyak.. jejantas ni ada iras2 jambatan p.pinang, tp saiz kecik..

yg tak sedapnya, ada aje nenek korea potong kita... dah le tu, bongkok sabut n bertongkat pulak.. memalukan umat je.. laju nenek ni berjalan... tak tekejo kita dibuatnya...

bila sampai sign oksu station, tengok ada banyak tangga n tinggi la nak ke atas... sabo je... naik ajela..

dari oksu, terus pergi COEX... dalam ni pun sesat jugak.. punyele beso tempat ni... and banyak yang hi class.. so window shop je.. nak makan minum pun kira dulu, berapa tinggal... last2 makan kat gangbyeon - murah...tmpt biasa - odeng, apom kecik kacang merah, and kueh bulat2...

by the time bus 1117 sampai - dah 7.30 n tiba apt su'ad 9 mlm... su'ad pn dah tido... it's 11.15 seoul time and i am still wide awake.. budak kat atas - tingkat 13 - tengah operasi kawad... kang budak ni tak pasal2 je kena jolok batang mop... ni anak dia, ke bapak dia yang kawad.. sabo..sabo...sabo...sabo...tarek napas...

kak long, angah, uda, mokde - tengok le link yang longodi sediakan..

PERSONAL, SEOUL: plan tak jadi semalam (http://www.museum.go.kr/eng/Highlights.do)

i planned to go on one of the outdoor walking trip via jamsil, pronounced as 'jamshil' [http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/SH/SH_EN_7_2.jsp?cid=273692]... but lain ceritanya...

first, i missed the 1117 bus by a few minutes, could see the bust passed the traffic lights, then wait n wait n wait for other buses, 1113 arrived, but to gangbyeon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gangbyeon_Station and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gangbyeon_Station).. naik ajela...

the bus was so hot, it felt like i was being microwaved... baju dah le berlapes2 and the driver turned on the heater so very high... dia nak buat 'orang panggang malaysia' ke???? ... ghase nak muntah, mual semua ada... tried to bukak d tingkap...melekatlak hamba Allah ni... so look for other seats... dapat... bukakla tingkap... gigi n muka menggigel, badan panas macam demam tinggi... nak bukak baju tak boleh... kang jadi stripper show la... sabo aje... dalam pada panas-sejok tu, tau2 terlelap and sedar2 atas jambatan... when naik bas with su'ad, i didn't see any jambatan... dah sesat lagi ke... where was my landmark.. telekom malaysia korea, well actually technomart... but their acronym sama : TM.. nak senang ingat ... telekom malaysia je...

rupenya jauh lagi, baru sampai.. selama ni asyik tido n harapkan su'ad je..padan muka odi ...

anyhow, turon2 je lari ke TM ... cari toilet, bukak baju sekejap... bekipas2 dlm toilet, nak buang panas...

then went to get mineral water, along the way, cakup kuih, kek, and ape2 yang percuma yang dirasakan halal... this is one way untuk jimat duit for food;), tp make sure timing betol;)...

dah agak2 perot dah beralas, cari places yang tak payah patah balik ke jamsil...so finally decide gi museum...indoor.. gerenti tak sejok.. carilah pulak subwaynya.. ada dua cara- satu guna dua line, datu lagi guna tiga line.. tiga line nampak pendek je... so guna tiga..

lagi sekali...don't trust the map... line pendek...jalan kaki nak transfer ngalahkan oghang lari marathon..mak datok jauhnye...

by the time sampai ichon station, tercungap2.. now where's the stadium... ikut info tak jauh, 450 meter je.. memang tak jauh, dengan angin sejok yang tak sepoi2 bahasa, couple ngan suhu bawah tahap beku... 450 meter rasanya macam 450 km...

made it to the museum (ttp://www.museum.go.kr/EngMain.do) and bagusnya...PERCUMA FREEEEEEEEEEEE... odi is always a sucker for free stuff.. so suka yang amat2.. ALLAH maha kaya betol... dah ready 3000won.. rupenya muzium lain yang kena baya... masuk2 cari toilet lagi...microwave no. 2... panas..

strip sume, tinggal yang patot2 je..nasib baik bawak knapsack beso.. main sumbat2 je...

sekali2 bile geghak kat depan... wow.. ini tempat lee dong gun (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Lee_Dong_Gun) and kim suh ah of my name is kim sam soon (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Kim_Sun_Ah) berlakon dalam night after night (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/When_It%27s_At_Night and http://content.mbc.co.kr/english/drama/08/1698230_25450.html) .. odi memang dah lama minat pada kim jung hwa (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Kim_Jung_Hwa), ever since dia berlakon dalam into the sun (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Into_the_Sun) ..kwon sang woo was gud in diz one too (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Kwon_Sang_Woo)

terubat hati... the tangga, the pagoda.. cuma cannot figure out the treasure... otak dah beku, tak leh recall.. my fellow hallyuans, eat your heart out...HA HA HA.. masa turun tangga dari second to first floor, terbayang the last scene;)

malam tido sampai termimpi2 doz scene.. tp yang tak sedapnye mimpi gak coffin which shaped like an iron condom chasing me, not good.. not very good at all...

anyhow back to reality... kaki bertambah2 saket... the place is huge.. and i mean really huge... stadium usm pun rase kecik... kud be my kaki dah saket kot.. but it sure feels like the usm stadium is much smaller, the track i mean...

by the time jam sampai separoh pusingan kat second floor (american second floor ye)... dah sempot, terhenjot2.. kpale termenong ... mcm mana la nak balik ke ichon and all tru the subways n ke bus station and umah su'ad.. memang dah lempeng, i mean limping... tp kalau lompat2 katak, kurang saket.. but kang ada lak ingat ini hantu dalam stephen chow movie.. lompat twang twang.. so jalan la jugak..

before balik...sarung balik ape yang patot..

btw time keluar muzium.. it was dark, real dark ...lagi la sejok..

the song i will survive by gloria gaynor keeps playing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBR2G-iI3-I) .. lyric tak ingat .. cume ingat bhg i will survive je...

balik guna subway dua line.. huh senang.. jalan pun kurang.. tp still terhencot.. the stuff odi will do in the name of hallyu ( http://www2.hawaii.edu/~sukj/KoreanWave/hallyu.html and http://asiaenglish.visitkorea.or.kr/ena/HA/HA_EN_7.jsp)..

by the time sampai gangbyeon.. ingat nak makan odeng.. tak ade lak... so end up makan apom red beans...

tunggulah close to satu jam 1113, well it kud be shorter.. tp sure feels like 1 hour...

by the time sampai umah.... baru jam 8 mlm.. rasa macam pukul 12 je...

and su'ad dah buat sushi.. so kalau tak turun berat badan odi, tau le sebabnye.. walaupun jalan banyak, makannya lagi banyak... segala yang free and su'ad's cooking... kena bukak restoran cik su'ad kita ni.. odi jadi tukang lap and sapu sampah dah le.. tp janji restorannya kat korea..

so tak jadi outdoor, jadi indoor..

hmm .. lepas ni kena buat indoor exercise kat queensbay aje lah....tak payah gi stadium..panas..

so jemputlah tengok kat sini ye .. http://www.museum.go.kr/EngMain.do

PERSONAL, SEOUL: don't ask just search...

Berbekalkan peta subway, dan tak lepas-lepas dari tangan & mata, takot terlepas stesen, odi berjaya menggunakan subway seoul... hari pertama, nervous gak, alhamdullilah su'ad was great at giving the instruction when we went to seoul together... maka total recalling on the first day... spent so much time to find out how to get from jamsil station to namsan park via donguk university

the problem started when the map that i brought was one of those that come scaleless...well, can't blame the map... it was one of those cartoon stye mao, so the distance and places of interests were kind of skewed... so when i was searching for the fortress and the tower, ended up using a long way, pusing habes rumah orang, and jalan ape2 entah... masuk entah celah mana... tak masuk lagi lari dari anjeng, tak le beso, tp kalau dah penakot... speed gak... tuan je saje je tengok anjeng2 dia nak rapat, dia ingat kita suke anjeng dia yang siap pakai baju tu.. huh...

bila jumpe national theater of korea, lega... tapi dah habis 2 jam... cari jalan.. from there, easy to go to namsan seoul... easy as the route dah jumpa... tapi, ya Allah, tingginye bukit, musim sejok lak tu... napas rase nak putus, jantong punyele kuat... takot gak mati katak aje kat seoul ni... kang org tanye, odi mati sebab ape, panjat bukit nak tengok tower, mintak simpang benda2 ni... kalau mati pun bio le kat malaysia, n lepas sembahyang ke ... sedap le siket..

anyhow, reached the tower...

lepas tu nak gi hanok... sesat lagi... road sign dia orang ni tak leh ikot habes... tau2 je jumpa paret, manalak jalan dia.. operasi biasa, patah balik, baca sign, guna arah laen.. baru jumpa jalan, tapi ada orang tengah repair.. redah je, yg penting ada jalan, bukan paret...

sebenornye odi selalu je kena patah balik sana sini... masa nak cari palace pun, patah balik kat station sebab cari balik ape anak2 panah, nama2 yang agak... masa nak balek dari insadong lagi terok.. teros sampai namsan park.. terbabas.. guide kat touris info tak paham english.. kita kata stesen, dia bagi segala nama hotel, buat ape.. malas nak cakap, kata thank you.. so end cari sendiri lagi...

yg penting cari stesen, dalam gelap gelumat tu, jumpe teros gi gangbyeon makan odeng.. den naik balek tren gi jamsil..

moral of the story - malas bertanya sesat jalan... kat seoul, lagi rajen tanya, lagi sesat jalan.. so bring a map, not the cartoonish type, but a real map.. kalau ada doz gprs, gps, or pms bawak aje..

PERSONAL: Spicy Korean Rice Cakes (Duk Boki) Recipe

http://koreanfood.about.com/od/snacksanddesserts/r/Dukboki.htm

Now I know how it is spelt using the Roman alphabet - not topoki, but duk boki. It sure sounds like topoki; the [d] is actually a [t], have to check if it is dental, aspirated etc, because it's different than the Malay [t].

Su'ad took me to this famous restaurant at the 'duk boki' town. It was jam packed. The restaurant is not that big, but the tables are arranged in such a way that they can accomodate many customers... and i mean many customers. To get to my table, I had to really squeeze myself (stomach in that is) and walked sideways to reach to the table. But it was worth it.

The journey to was quite long... a few subways, a few walkways, a few shivering ways, well lots of shivering, felt like my teeth were hitting each other, my legs too... so damn cold, but enjoyed it... feel like dancing in the rain, nope like dancing in the cold..

anyhow, the duk boki was really, really, really delicious, and will definitely have it again before I go back. Oh, in case my friends are wondering why odi writes in full spelling... she needs to let her nephews and nieces read all the notes to their Tok Noli... if odi uses sms language, only odi will understand it..

PERSONAL: Kambing meragut rumput; rumput diragut - d rizn i luv teachin oldo itz hard werk*^____^*

"Buat ayat tentang apa yang kita bincang tadi. Saya beri lima minit". Then i waited for my students to do what was asked. "Hendak panggil nombor atau hendak 'volunteer'. As usual, the students as usual kind of had the attitude of 'wait and see'. Then Fithri said, "Saya". 'Ok...teruskan'. And he confidently gave these - "Kambing meragut rumput. Rumput diragut". The other students were like - what the heck was he doing as that was not what the lecturer wanted. "Bukan buat ayat la... Dr suruh buat ayat tentang apa yang kita belajar tadi" - someone said loudly. Well, at first, I was taken aback by Fithri's response, but then when realized that, although his interpretation was different than the rest of the class and also my own original, interpretation, it was not wrong. He correctly gave an example that reflected was taught based on the instruction - "But ayat....".
Actually, the first time I heard the sentences read, I wanted to laugh out loud, but something in my brain said...."hey, wait a minute...There's nothing wrong here. He only gave another unexpected interpretation which I always categorized as 'unsangkarable'. You never know what the response from a student will be. It was just such a hoot. Looking at Fithri's face when his classmates said "Bukanlah...".
I had to digress a bit to the topic of 'ketaksaan dan kekaburan dalam semantik'. I also had to increase the level of difficulty in discussing the topik on 'ergativiti, absolutif, nominatif, akusatif, transitiviti' because of Fithri's example. Thanx to Fithri, I cannot stop ROFL until now. Talk about giving the unsangkarable.
Well, this is just one out of many examples why i love teaching - it really reminded me of Forest Gump's 'Life is a box of chocolate. You never know what you gonna get."

PERSONAL: Pragmatics and Discourse of a Child-Parent Interaction

Umaimah Mohd Idris 's 6 year old Aerfan told his Kakak Mima that he has something to discuss with me.... Ayat yang digunakan : Aerfan nak naik atas sekejap... Ada benda nak bincang dengan Mama... sounds so important n official.... "Mama esok Aerfan kena pergi ke sekolah ke? (with a no nonsense look on his "innocent" face)

Objective: I wish I don't have to go to school and Mama agrees with me;)

Result: Odi will let the child skip school. Kidz need all the rest they can get before they enter the REAL world. One or two days cutting class is fine. Come to think of it... one or two weeks skipping class pun alrite gak.... The kid needs enough rest to make him grow - paraphrase from Glee 22 june 2010...

Future Plan: Odi will use this in her exam question or in her class. Real examples are difficult to find.

PERSONAL - Language and Anonymity In FB

It all started with "Odi Yusoff is in an open relationship". Well, actually it all started because I was out of my mind with Peter Ladefoged, the phonetician. To get all the concepts in my brain was hard. The words in his book were getting blurrier and blurrier. So I decided to fiddle with the stuff provided by the FB. One of them was changing my relationship status. And Nita started the ball rolling...until I saw this: "Apalah anakda ini semua katakan!!!!"

Now, in other computer-mediated communication, I can go anonymous and shoot whatever I want and feel without other individuals knowing who is behind the username. But with this particular FB account, it appears that I'd better watch what I write, and what I do. Something which is harmless to some might actually create uncomfortableness, or rather discomfort, onto others. I totally forget about this. So when I read Ayahda Prof's comment... it kind of bring me back down to earth, although I am not sure for how long as I tend to go back up to my cosmos pretty fast. I must go back to Grice, Leech, Levinson, Halliday, and Gu to decipher what the whole asynchronous interaction was really about. And perhaps I should also create another account so that I can continue shooting my mouth off for the sake of anonymousity. Nahhh... too much time will be spent on log in, log out... And if you realize, I did not tag this note to Ayahda Prof's FB... how should I put this - nak mampossssss.....

PERSONAL - Odi Yusoff: A promise is not meant to be broken

A couple of years ago, i was told that promises were meant to be broken. This was from the mouth of a so-called intellectual. But when one is dealing with a child, a promise is a promise, and you'd better make sure that it is fulfilled....Or you will not have a quiet, restful life during the weekend...

"Along Odi, bila Along Odi nak yang rahsia tu?"
"Apa dia Emi?"
"Bila Along Odi nak (whispering to my ear) nak tangkap gambar Emi? Along Odi kata nak tangkap gambar Emi."
"Oh! Ok.. Along Odi lupe lak. Jom.. Along Odi cari kamera jap ye.."

I went to get my camera from my bag and made sure the camera and setting were fine.

"Along Odi, Emi duduk sini ye. Nanti Along Odi tangkap Emi macam ni ye. Masuk Facebook."
"Emi posing le betol-betol."
"Betol le ni."
"Okay dah siap."
"Emi nak tengok."
"Atok Noli, Emi cantik tak?"
"Ok.. Emi tunggu Along Odi masukkan dalam Facebook ye."
"Bile?"
"Nantila, Along Odi masukkan."

So, I had to snap Emi's photos and... upload them to my Facebook as promised.
If Korea had the slogan - Korean Sparkling-, I had - Helmi Sparkling.

With kidz, never, never ever promise anything or they will haunt you non-stop until you ... Thank God, I only said "tangkap gambar"... the facebook uploading part was his, not mine... dapat kaki, nak peha la pulak...

PERSONAL & HMA MORPH^^: neomorphology of contemporary malay and sms/text language

when sdr zaidi ismail uploaded the pic on sikal, i can't help breaking this into these little units...

see http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=31000788&id=1087210663&ref=mf

moto + sikal = motosikal (for complex word)
ba + sikal = basikal (for complex word)
lalu + an + sikal = laluan sikal (for compound complex word)

then when sdr ramlee wahab wrote about linguistik and lipstik, i came up with this break down

lingui + stik = linguistik
lip + stik = lipstik
chop + stik = chopstik
the + stik<>stig = the stik <> the stig of top gear

based on these break downs, one can see that the free morphemes and roots for the words are 'ba', 'moto', 'lingui', 'lip' and 'chop' and the bound morphemes are 'sikal' and 'stik' or the affix

let's draw the tree, minus branch.. i don't know how to put them in notes, so use our imagination ye..

Noun

root noun affix

ba sikal

Noun

root noun affix

lingui stik

The lexical category for these words is governed by the affix, and not the root. This fulfills the Head Last Principle.

******so kak gayah, kak umm, su'ad - what do you think? acceptable

The idealists and purists of malay language will definitely raise their eyebrow on this! However, my view is that language lives and evolves.. One of these days, my analysis might be acceptable, especially if one is grouped with murdoch... not the billionaire, but the A-Team character....

PERSONAL: Makanan Ruji Ketika Musim Durian

Buat ape tu, Bah?
Gaul deghian..
Banyak ni je ke, Bah?
Tu bawah meje, ade lagi. Habes kang Abah gaul lagi.

Aim dah turunkan resipi ni pada anak-anak dia. Lagi hebat, dia masukkan dalam peti ais lagi.

Dan bila dah habes makan, jangan cuci tangan dulu. Jilat apa-apa yang patot sampai berseh tangan. Fuh! Sedaaaaaaaaaaaapnya....

Buatnya dia orang kumpol kat tong sampah. Tak payah, baik beli durian betol, kopek. Isi makan, kulit simpan.

Di Taiping ni, durian Batu Kurau famous. Abah pun rajen ke sana cari durian. kalau tak ada, Abah beli kat depan sekolah Georgie je. Tapi mahal le siket.

Dalam umah kita orang ni, Mak ngan Adik je tak suka durian, yang lain, hantuuuuuuu. Tolak tepi la lepas makan tu, kepala rase nak tercabot atau nyut nyut nyut.

Aim lagi untong. Kawasan belakang rumah dia ada tanam durian. Fresh from d pokoks. So far la. In the future tak tau lak apa jadi;)

Lagi satu, Mak akan rebuskan bijik durian untok kita orang. Ni pun sedap gak. Tambah bila lende-lender dia keluo. Keje Abah lak buang kulet kat bijik durian tu. Abes buang kulet, Abah ato dalam pinggan. Anak-anak tukang makan je. Yang ni sampai kita orang beso pun Abah rajen buat gak. Abah tau anak dia rajen-rajen.^^

Sekali-sekali Mak buatlah bubor kacang durian untok kita orang. Mak tak buat selalu, sebab Mak tak suka durian.

Tempoyak ada jugak Mak, Abah buat. Tapi selalu tak banyak. Sebab Mak tak suka. Tempoyak Abah selalu buat sambal.

Tapi sebab utamanya Odi tulis kali ni: Abah sukaaaaaaaa sangat-sangat durian, sampai Odi pernah kata: Abah pantangla Bah. Masok hospital Abah tak endak. Kalau Abah takot tak dapat makan durian, tak pe. Nanti Odi blend, anto pada Abah pakai straw. Abah senyom je... Odi, well...nyesal tak sudah, sebabnye: kaso bahasa......

PERSONAL: MILO TELUR MARJERIN PANAS

"Odi, nak minum?"
"Abah dah balik..."
"Abah buatkan Odi air milo, ndak tak? Campur telor ngan marjerin."
"Ndak...ndak"
"Tapi Odi jangan bagi tau mak, ye."
"OK".

Masa tu, Abah baru balik kerja pukul 2.00 pagi. Odi pulak tengah ngulangkaji untuk SPM. Abah, uniform n baju preman pun tak bukak lagi..

Odi dengar Abah dah tengek air kat dapor.

Lepas tu tunggu marjerin cair... fuh...

"Emmmmm...sedaaaapnya Bah... Esok Abah buatkan Odi lagi ye"....

PESONAL: THE NET FOR TEACHERZ LIKE ME^^

With the advent of internet... who am I kidding here, this is certainly not my style... now, let's start again...

The net, what does it mean to me as a confirmed addict...

First, I love it because I can get all stuff just by googling and yahooing. I used to altavistaing, but found Yahoo, and later Google, much better. Now I must admit that I am the King...no must be gender correct, Queen of Googling. Give me anything, and I will google. If any of my students said they cannot find stuff on the net, that's it... Drop my course, you don't deserve to be in this class then. Because in this class, nothing can't be found on the net. Do you get that!!! Ya, Puan, nanti saya cari lagi.

Well, Odi did not really say it that way. She's too nice to threaten her students... She usually says directly in a very 'lemah lembut, gemalai', gentle way: Itu pun kamu tak tahu, cari benda lain kamu tahu, dah...pegi cari lagi.

I think I should offer a course on how to search on the net, given the number of students who cannot find academic materials on the net. However, I believe that they are definitely the princes and princesses of searching for non-academic stuff, or they would not have gone to mysoju, youtube, test tube, and TI-UP^^.

You can confirm with my students on the materials they used from the net: TextStar, Ironcreek, dictionaries, papers from ISI and SCOPUS-recognized journals, youtube on Randy Pausch, Chomsky and a number of other academicians... and not to mention

Youtube of Faizal Tahir, Aizat, Sudirman, Siti Nurhaliza... What have all this people got to do with linguistics? A lot actually. And that was also one of the favorite questions by my students: Dr, apa kene mengena ___(fill in the blanks)___ dengan linguistik? Itupun kamu tak tahu. Kamu ni tahun 1/2/3 USM ke atau Tahun 1/2/3 Sekolah Rendah USM. Tak tau sekarang tak pe. Yang penting, exam nanti kamu tahu. Pi cari sendiri^^.

Second, the net allows me to interact with my students miles and miles, and hours and hours away. For instance, Alin and I discussed about materials that should be given to class using Yahoo! Messenger.

Knock, knock. Dr ada?
Ada.
Kawan tanya kelas cancel ke, Dr.
Ada tak saya sebut cancel?
Tak ada.
Kena pegila, Dr.
Kenala.
Knape...saya tak da kat USM. Keje jalan. Kamu beri bahan ni (send the file). Macam biasa ambil kedatangan.

See nothing is impossible on the net. FYI, I was in Brunei, chasing Yabit out of the way.

My Yahoo! Messenger is on 24/7 and students can contact me any time, provided I reply back laaa.... Usually, they would always give me a knock first, followed by Dr ada. Why, because I am usually invisible, and do not want to be disturbed when I am preparing my notes. Peak season for the students to contact me is assignment and exam time.

There's this habit among my students that I discovered. Quite a number of them would not dare ask me personally. So they would as other students to yahoo mess me or chat with me. Because of that I had a few middleman, or should I say, middle student, who acted as liason officers, such as Alin, Sharifah, and Jidah. Effe and a few others would contact me directly.

And the net too helped me locate students who went missing in action. I am not sure if any of you remember me searching for Erhan. Thank God for the email and FB. He responded to my CALL, more like a written SHOUT, and managed to graduate from my class, and is pursuing his dream of becoming a photographer. I can tel you, he's good. Cek diz ...http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=27118&id=100000162916662&ref=mf

But most of all the net has allowed me "To boldly go where no man and woman has gone before"

INTERNET: The final frontier
These are the voyages of the Odi's Internet Enterprise
Its lifetime mission
To explore strange new worlds
To seek out new life and new civilizations
To boldly go where no man and woman has gone before

Which is the drambeans... and allkpop... and cpopaccess.. and.... youtube...and my soju...and viiki....yiiiiippppeeeeee...

So I don't understand why some individuals want to block certain stuff and not see the advantages of the net to people like me..... hmmmm....

PERSONAL: Nita and Me......

Nita was, and I believe still is, one of the math geniuses in my batch: Class of ’81.

I first knew her in Std 2, when she came to join my class in Std. 2 after her father was transferred from somewhere to Taiping.

Both our Abahs are policemen. The difference was that Nita’s Abah was higher in rank than my Abah. Abah was for a long time, a mata-mata or in the current terminology – a constable.

There are so many memories of me and Nita, not because we are the best of buddies, the goodest of girlfriends (though Timah will never, never badmouth Nita in front of me for fear that I will pass it to Nita^^), but because we share so much:

1. both Abahs police
2. went to the same school
3. classmate from Std 2 till 6
4. schoolmate from Form 1 til 5
5. went to KE for like a few months together
6. younger sisters were, hope still do, friends (lost contact for quite sometime, and I m doing a jejak kasih routine via FB now )– herz Wati, mine Ita
7. younger brothers are of the same age: hers Ijam, mine Wan
8. went to the States to further our studies – Nita in Nebraska, me in Texas
9. was somewhat tomboyish in nature, though Nita outgrew this phase... Me… I think I also have outgrew this phase. Nita and others will have to vouch this for me.

Being the math genius, Nita can handle all math problems with ease. Gave her any math question, she can give you the answer very quickly. She and Lean See, Fatma Najla, Judy, Da, Zainon, Azuan, Zaitun, Ani, Siti Zubaidah, and others whom I can’t recall at the moment..

When we were in Form 5, she gave free math tuition on Saturdays in school. However, there weren’t that many takers. Why… Some of the fifth formers accused her of showing off – nak berlagak, mentang-mentang sains stream.

Nita always has this leader material.. You should see Nita at the recent OGA AGM … She almost took over the whole meeting, but because she has so much respect for the seniors, and because she worried there wasn’t any doctors to give CPR should the unthinkable happened, Nita slowly backed down…

Now she is in full gear with pushing the TMGS OGA Central Chapter with the help of her small band of army – Ena as the Public Relation Officer and Recruiter, Hana as the Secretary and the Form Distributor, Kak Kay as the Liason Officer based in HQ and Tempeyek Deliverer, Shirley as the Counter, and not to be missed Odi as the READER (kah3x )….

Now back to the tuition story…… So, finally, Nita only had me.. the math…., can’t figure out the best expression, here but let’s just say this, if Forest Gump was in our batch, he will do much better than Odi.

The first time, we had a one-to-one tutoring at her home, I brought my SRP math revision book from Pelangi. Can still remember the cover. Isinya lupe, being the math ‘genius’, that I was.

Nita was perplexed.

“Di, buku SPM, form 4 , form 5, tak de.”
“Ade, tapi, Ta, yang Form One pun tak leh faham. Buat yang ni dulu la ye, Nita.”

So, here I was doing my math SRP revision to prepare for SPM. And Nita was going woosh here, woosh that with her SPM level math problems. Keling-keling gak tengok, tapi tak dapat tangkap satu pun. I can hear the Chariot of Fire’s theme song playing in my head as I am remembering Nita raced to reach the end of the line of her problem…

Me, right now, I can hear Darth Vader’s Imperial March with Jim MacKay’s dramatic narration:
Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sport…
The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat…
The human drama of athletic competition…
This is ABC's Wide World of Sports!

“Nita,dah siap.”
“La, apasal jadi macam ni?” (… the agony of defeat)
“Odi tak faham lagi la, Nita”
“Di, SPM dah dekat sangat-sangat ni”
“Tak pe le, Nita. Ada lagi a few months (and if I am not mistaken, less than three of four months away) Sekurang-kurangnya bahagian Form One sampai Form Three Odi boleh jawab.”
“Boleh jawab ape. Yang ni pun tak betol. La nape la Odi ni bodohnye.” (…the human drama of SPM preparation)

Speaking, about ‘bodoh’, I didn’t mind actually when Nita said it to me, though I was hurt and sad when others said it. Reason:

Others said it, and ignored me from their revision group. “Awat, dia orang takut bodoh Odi menjangkit kat dia orang .” Nita, on the other hand, said it, but she helped me.

I am not exaggerating when I said I was stupid ,and totally hopeless, in Math. Miss Ng, my math teacher, now an associate professor at Nanyang Tech, wondered how I managed to be a prefect when I failed all her math tests and exams. “How did TMGS select her prefects”, she said.

Well, the story was like this, Miss Ng: I was made a prefect not because of my academic excellence, but because I was the best athlete in the school for my batch.

Now, if Miss Ng were to ask me to run 100m, 200m and 400m , then I was certain, that I can draw the track diagram, better than the ‘gambarajah Venn’, complete with labels of the starting line and finishing line and the proper scale “dengan nisbah 1: 10”.

And for extra bonus, threw in the name of Edwin Moses, the world record holder for 400m hurdles who is a great physicist, whom I tried to emulate in my dreams, and I mean real dreams, when one goes to bed and have them… which is given a technical term ‘visualization’ by my coaches…

Now, with Miss Ng,… one time she had me stand in front of the whole class, because I kept holding and fiddling with the chalk, and no math formula and solution were written on the board. Cannot tell other punishments she gave…maluuuuuuuuu, yeah rite…

But I must also tell you my proudest and happiest moment with Miss Ng. I did not get a single zero in her class. Why???? Because I was so diligent and good at copying her all her questions verbatim*^____^*. Smart, kan???

I also did this for my chemistry, physics, and biology during SPM, and it worked. I got a 6,6,and 8 respectively. Nice combination if you go into ekor. Hei, wouldn’t you know it, this is my car number… God is indeed great. Jez realize it now… hi3x.

One of the invigilators said: “tak payah salin soalan”, and I just smiled. That did not include making up my own questions and answering them, with the hope that the SPM examiners will realize that “Odi bukan tak baca buku, tapi spot salah soalan”. Exactly like what my students did for my exam Q…as Alin said “Cikgu borek, student rintik”

And proudly Odi would like to tell the whole world that she had a 3 for modern math, and a 4 for add math… The thrill of victory^___^

Either Nita was good, Miss Ng was great, and managed to make a miracle out of Odi….

OR… the graph was very, very, very, very, and I mean very low, for our batch. Anyhow , thank so very much Nita for not giving up on Odi.

FYI, now, ahora mismo, currently, setakat ni, soalan math darjah 1, Odi sure can handle one.. but need calculator la ye….

And FYI also, Nita was the best student of her major at University of Nebraska, Lincoln … a wonderful achievement for a Malaysian, a Malay, a woman, and ---- an anak ‘BOND’… A PERFERCT TEN … to the tune of Nadia (Comaneci)’s Theme Song..

Odi^__^
